Until recently, emerging market economies were mainly thought
of as a source of low-cost manufacturing and cheap labour.
This view led to substantial increases in the foreign direct
investment (FDI) in these countries from the early 1990s onwards,
as more industries became globalised and companies in the
developed nations attempted to gain access to the rapidly
growing domestic economies of the BRIC nations – Brazil, Russia,
India and China.
