  PROFILE

Michael McGuinness

Company: Routeco plc.

Interviewee: Michael McGuinness.

Job Title: Head of MIS.

The Subject: Routeco has updated its ERP environment in an effort to improve its customer service and become more adaptable to business changes.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Michael McGuinness.

BACKGROUND: Michael has been working in IT for over 20 years and has been MIS manager at Routeco since May 1997. He is responsible for all aspects of IT and telecoms across the company’s 19 UK sites and one site in Austria.

He manages a small helpdesk team that provides internal support for all applications, including its OneOffice supply chain and business management system, as well as all desktop applications. He also manages the development and support of Routeco’s e-commerce solutions which range from online trading to full integration using XML.

The MIS team supports 270 users on a daily basis, 180 users on OneOffice and another 90 remote or mobile users.

Along with the implementation of the OneOffice solution, Michael and his team have introduced new systems for email, business intelligence reporting, B2B integration with key accounts, e-commerce and mobile workforce communication.

The future focus is on building on the work already done in areas such as warehouse management, workflow and electronic data interchange, to further streamline the company’s business processes.

Before joining Routeco, Michael was IT manager of Nutmeg Europe (VF Corporation), based in Northampton, where he was responsible for the implementation of the parent company’s ERP system in the UK.

Q: WHY WERE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW ERP SYSTEM?

A: Routeco is one of the UK’s leading distributors of industrial automation and control products. Our business is continually evolving and our IT systems have to keep pace with our changing business demands.

Although we had been a long-standing customer of Strategix and used their products for the last 11 years, it was time to give our systems a refresh, so we decided to review the options open to us in the market.

The main area we needed to improve was the efficiency of our transaction processes. In the old system we had to access two or three different screens to get all the information required to complete a transaction. This was time-consuming and affected our overall customer service.
