Alignment is not enough
Chris Turner: many failures stem from
organisational resistance
The notion that business strategy and IT strategy should
be aligned is widely accepted as conventional wisdom and,
frankly, common sense. Unfortunately, it’s still not common
practice. What’s worse, this alignment is not enough. The
role of information technology needs to be an integral ingredient
of business strategy if companies are to keep pace with, make
sense of and exploit the current and emerging tools.
The results of this year’s ERP Conspectus survey (see
previous article) offer some encouragement, with 60% of
respondents saying their corporate strategy is shaping their
current enterprise applications environment (up from 51% in
2007).
