  PROFILE

Jack Cutts

Company: Nottingham Building Society.

Interviewee: Jack Cutts.

Job Title: Divisional head of IT.

The Subject: Nottingham Building Society has completely overhauled its IT infrastructure in an effort to remain competitive and provide its customers with improved service.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Jack Cutts.

BACKGROUND: Jack has over 25 years’ experience in the IT industry. In that time, his responsibilities have covered systems development, software selection and implementation, contract negotiation, project planning and control, programme management and IT strategy development.

Jack joined The Nottingham in 2006 to lead the replacement of its core mortgage systems and the underlying infrastructure.

He has worked in a wide range of markets and companies, such as British Steel, Jungle.com, Boots and Argos. He also gained additional business knowledge within Boots Opticians where he led the change programme.

His last role before joining The Nottingham was leading a 60-strong IT team within a top five travel company.

Jack has experience in business process re-engineering where he also has a Masters Degree.

Q: WHAT WERE THE BUSINESS REASONS FOR ENHANCING YOUR IT ENVIRONMENT?

A: The Nottingham is the 16th largest building society in the UK so very much in the mid range. We provide the same services as larger societies but do not have their economies of scale; therefore our operations need to be as streamlined and efficient as possible.

When our new chief executive arrived two years ago, he developed a business strategy to take the Society forward and enhance the range of products and services offered to our customers.

We realised our existing IT infrastructure would not be up to meeting this challenge as there had been a lack of investment in IT for some time.

Every time we needed to implement something new it became a major development task rather than a straightforward configuration job. This acted as a major inhibitor in getting new products to the market quickly.

There were also a number of areas that we needed to enhance – for instance, our internet capability needed improving and integrating with our core systems. We also needed to speed up our whole mortgage process.

Our existing mortgage system had been in place for a number of years but had been heavily modified and was really getting to the end of its useful life.

We had decided on a new package, Summit from TietoEnator, but we knew it would be a daunting task implementing this.

We therefore decided to totally reconstruct our IT infrastructure to provide a robust, secure and compliant foundation that could take the business forward.
