This is not an IT-specific concern – it is a business-critical
issue to be addressed at management level. And it was only
by engaging senior management with IT managers that the organisation
was able to regain control, and create tailored IT policies
that reflected individuals’ status within the organisation.
For those working for a third party, the policy was enforced
by making it part of the corporate contract.
Overall, the implications for UK business are significant.
From the sales director moving jobs who swiftly downloads
the full customer database, through to the junior production
team sharing music files, often in breach of copyright, the
potential business cost cannot be ignored. And that cost is
growing, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that the incidence
of information and system misuse via these devices is rapidly
on the increase.
