For most companies, the implementation of document imaging/management systems is accompanied by the conversion of large volumes of existing paper documentation. This article describes one approach that has been used successfully on a number of projects to efficiently prepare, scan and index large volumes of documents.

Documents are indexed within a document management system to allow for retrieval: the greater the level of indexing, the greater the flexibility there will be in the subsequent retrieval – both in terms of identifying the required document more quickly, and providing a greater degree of granularity in document retrieval.
