Managing organisational change and complexity – and the application development and integration underpinning it – is a major challenge. Martin Berman explains the power an enterprise architecture can bring.
Applications and systems rationalisation. An EA can
help to visualise cost-saving scope for consolidation where
there is overlapping functionality between systems. Often,
a very quick win for an EA is to identify the users who are
actually making use of the software installed on their computers,
and ensure that no unnecessary licence costs are being paid.
This can be identified manually (by a survey) or automatically
(using software auditing tools). The financial savings from
this one aspect of EA alone can be significant.
Developing strategic initiatives. To introduce strategic
programmes you must have a clear view of this big picture.
The EA can validate that the strategic intent is achievable
within the current EA. If it is not, then the necessary architectural
changes can be identified and implemented.
