  PROFILE

Chris Hassell

Company: Geest.

Interviewee: Chris Hassell.

Job Title: Programme Manager, Project Darwin.

The Subject: Food supplier Geest is modernising its operations around a foundation of ERP-based supply chain software.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Chris Hassell.

BACKGROUND: After training and qualifying as an accountant Chris has majored on managing major ERP implementations. He was attracted to Geest by its commitment to resourcing the management of the various stages of ERP introduction and exploitation. As Programme Manager of Project Darwin, he is responsible for the business preparation and rollout of Protean at 22 sites, applying group standards and practices around the application of their ERP solution.

Geest is coming to the end of the road in implementing Protean in all its UK and European sites. Chris’s teams have set the initial standards which can be built on by the group to improve its supply chain processes.

Before Geest, Chris jointly managed the implementation of SAP R/3 at East Midlands Electricity (EME), going live in August 1999 – taking responsibility for all project aspects of introducing the customer-facing modules. This was a major challenge in terms of cultural change and the number and varying complexity of legacy systems.

Outside work, Chris is a key member of the National Management Committee of the Association of Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus, acting as business and systems advisor. He is also a proud dad – one son is a UK champion at wheelchair basketball and the other a talented pantomime performer. Chris holds a post-graduate Certificate in Education from Westminster College, Oxford and a 1st Class BA (Hons) degree in Business Administration & Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

Q: WHAT WERE GEEST’S MAIN BUSINESS REASONS FOR ADOPTING NEW SUPPLY CHAIN SOFTWARE?

A: The object of Project Darwin was to establish a common use of systems and business processes within the devolved businesses in Geest. Our old Dec Alpha-based Impcon system got us through the year 2000 problem but it was old technology and wasn’t supportable. Geest realised that it was important to keep up with the times in order to maintain a competitive advantage.

Project Darwin was set up to find a system and put that system in – in a consistent way – across all our sites. The main objective was for the business to have a quality ERP package and quality use of an ERP package.
