  PROFILE

Julie Hirsch

Company: RDF Media.

Interviewee: Julie Hirsch.

Job Title: HR Director.

The Subject: TV production company RDF’s human resources department is able to keep track of its complex workforce using new software.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Julie Hirsch.

BACKGROUND: As RDF Media’s HR director, Julie has been responsible for building up the new department from scratch, implementing systems, policies, procedures, benefits and pension schemes. She joined RDF in January 2004 after a career break of nearly four years, during which time she did some freelance HR consultancy.

From June 1995 to May 2000, she was European HR vice president at Turner Broadcasting, responsible for the HR function at all the company’s TV network business operations across Europe – including Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies, TNT and CNN.

During this time, the company went through major change, including the merger with Time Warner and the closure of entire business operations in London, Paris and Amsterdam. Julie worked with senior management and outside legal counsel to plan these closures and was responsible for consultation with and notification to employees, and negotiation of redundancy packages.

From August 1993 to June 1995, she was a personnel manager at the BBC and before that, from February 1988 to December 1992, personnel manager at TV-am. She began her career in 1984 as a graduate trainee in Staffordshire County Council’s personnel department before moving on to become divisional personnel officer at Willis Faber plc.

Q: WHAT WERE RDF’S MAIN REASONS FOR ADOPTING A NEW HR SYSTEM?

A: Although we floated earlier this year, the company has existed for not much longer than 10 years. I joined two years ago and before that there was no HR department. The company was operating an outdated Compel system that crashed regularly, and producing quite simple reports was a major headache.

The company made a decision to bring in a senior HR person and I joined in January 2004. It soon became clear that the HR system was very user-unfriendly. It was difficult to manipulate the information within it and although there was an employee interface, it was so cumbersome that most people gave up using it. So we beauty paraded a new version of Compel, along with Snowdrop and Missing Link.
