Kerry Litten: corporate politics often delay the decision-making process

IT plays a crucial role in supporting the business processes of just about any company today. It’s a business enabler. However, disillusionment with the ability of the IT function to deliver what the business really wants, and the cost involved, has led some organisations to think of IT as a necessary evil – something they cannot do without but something that should be procured at the lowest possible cost like any other commodity.

This is unfortunate because by doing this, they are depriving themselves of getting any added business value from IT. They may also be exposing their business to risks they are not fully aware of, by under-investing in IT security for example. Instead of relegating IT to a commodity status, organisations should be asking what needs to be done to ensure that IT is enabling the business to achieve its goals.
