For those who don’t yet understand what web services are, the most succinct description is that they offer a means of automating what a human user does when searching the web and performing transactions via a web browser.

Ultimately a system such as BPM will be able to dynamically seek the most appropriate means of satisfying a requirement, without prespecifying where and how to do it. This is what is meant by service oriented architecture (SOA), the latest buzz acronym. Clearly this has enormous implications for supply chain management, which is traditionally based on fixed contracts.
