Workflow management has been around for 20 years now. The
first suppliers were FileNet and Plexus in the US and Staffware
in the UK – the only early pioneers to survive. Staffware
has recently been absorbed by TIBCO, and Plexus has long been
a division of BancTec.
Those early workflow systems were very rigid in their application,
and all possible scenarios had to be catered for in the process
design. The design was not originally graphical, but required
coding of some sort or another, and the user interfaces were
of the old ‘green screen’ text terminal type.
