Enterprise portals

Like ‘business process’, the word ‘portal’ suffers from multiple semantics. The loose definition, used by many packaged software vendors and the man on the Clapham omnibus, is a view on to something – be that a single packaged application or data set or single subject, like travel.

Enterprise portals, however, are not single-view focused but are all-encompassing, inclusive and holistic in scope. They provide a web-based technology framework that facilitates both corporate and personalised views on corporate web content, document management, line-ofbusiness applications, collaboration tools, corporate communications systems, raw data, multimedia and unstructured information in many forms. They provide an integration of all of this in context to the user.
