Conspectus October 2004 - Summary

Two decades on, and we’re still debating whether ERP or best of breed enterprise IT systems are best.

ERP are the big integrated automate-the-whole-company-in-one- go packages. Best of breed are more individual applications, offering specialist features in sometimes competitive edge-creating areas.

This Conspectus highlights an interesting divide over their relative merits: the evidence from our research is that UK companies are increasingly trusting best of breed and customised systems – just 16% of companies now rely mainly on ERP packages, compared to 34% a year ago.

But then Phil Summerfield of ERP Strategy weighs in with awkward questions like how you support half-a-dozen best of breed software suppliers, each producing a major upgrade every year.

Then there is the added complication of e-business software – sometimes integrated with the enterprise ERP or BoB systems, sometimes another standalone element. Dave Graham of Edengene offers e-business implementation advice.
