  PROFILE

Andrew Gordon

Company: Gordon’s Fine Foods.

Interviewee: Andrew Gordon.

Job Title: Managing director.

The Subject: Specialist food manufacturer Gordon’s is a medium-sized business which has taken on full-scale ERP software.

PERSONAL FILE

NAMES: Andrew Gordon.

BACKGROUND: Andrew has been an executive director of Charles Gordon since 1989. He was first taken on to project manage the expansion of the company’s production, management, quality, marketing and sales.

As managing director, he implemented the iRenaissance system across the company, which included major changes to working practices and staffing.

He also represented the producers of Alcoholic Butters in defeating the European directive on spreadable fats and obtained a derogation with the support of MAFF to reduce the milk fat content so as to retain the traditional production of this product.

Among his previous jobs, Andrew spent nine years as a conservation officer with the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London and elsewhere, specialising in the conservation of arms and armour.

In his first job, he spent 10 years as a senior gunsmith working for G E Fulton & Son in Bisley. During that time he was responsible for the manufacturing of target rifles for World champion competitions and the repair and restoration of small arms.

Q: WHAT FIRST LED YOU TO ADOPT THE IRENAISSANCE ERP PACKAGE?

A: Our reason for going down that route is that although we are a relatively small company, our business involves several hundred recipes and thousands of different components. Previously we had a basic accounting package which basically meant we had no control over raw materials and the cost of raw materials.

We needed to get something which would assist us in that and there wasn’t a great deal on the market that was smaller than Ross’ iRenaissance. Sage had a package called Job Shop but that had no QA component, another package only ran from the supplier’s server and we wanted to run it from our own server – so although there were cheaper packages around, we would have had to compromise quite significantly on what we were getting.

We decided we would go for ERP and see what we got for our money from which supplier. In the end, it was between Sanderson and Ross and basically we felt that Ross had the edge.
