prove inefficient
Oakes argues that the balance is in fact tipping strongly
in favour of open technology, for two good reasons. The first
is the trend for companies to integrate processes across organisational
boundaries, in order to connect with their trading partners;
the second is the need for smaller organisations to integrate
in order to compete.
“In the first case, it’s hard enough to agree on standards
and tools within a single company, so trying to do it with
partners who have different infrastructures and different
levels of technical maturity is almost impossible without
open standards,” Oakes said.
