  COMPANY FILE

Allied Bakeries was founded by Garfield Weston in 1935. The company is a nationwide business supplying over one-third of the UK bread market.

It is part of the Associated British Foods Group (ABF) which also includes British Sugar, Silver Spoon, Ryvita and Twinings. ABF has interests throughout the world, from Poland to Australia, and is involved in both primary food production, manufacturing and retailing.

Allied Bakeries has 13 bakeries and eight depots producing and distributing both branded and own label bread and bakery products.

The company delivers 15 million loaves, 10 million rolls and 7 million crumpets to 16,000 outlets each week.

The UK bread market is worth £1.4 billion a year, with over 98% of households buying bread.

Currently Allied Bakeries is the largest supplier, followed closely by British Bakeries (Hovis) and Warburtons. Its key customers are the large multiples such as Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Iceland.

Q: HOW DID THE IMPLEMENTATION GO?

A: We installed it about 9 or 10 months ago. We piloted it on our helpdesk system which was an SQL server, and was important but not critical. Then we piloted it on the Beacon, Diamond and process control projects – so we have proved it on each system and then bought the appropriate licences. One advantage is that this is all back-office stuff, so the users don’t see it and don’t need to learn it.
