Simon Tomlinson: long way to go
For companies who lack either the courage or investment needed,
it will be hard to keep costs under control. And for those
who do take this step, it is likely to spell the end of the
role for distributors or high-street shops, since it will
be more economical for the manufacturer to sell direct to
the end consumer.
Shaw points out that suppliers who successfully mass customise
are configuring products from a series of modules, rather
than building from scratch.
