Conspectus January 2004 - Summary

For a department usually regarded as an IT backwater, there is a lot going on in HR/payroll’s use of technology.

Partly, this is driven by the cost constraints that our research finds many UK HR departments are operating under.

Outsourcing is an obvious response to tighter budgets, and Joseph Ajuwon follows this growing trend. But our ‘Round Table’ interviews with a number of HR expert consultants highlight the danger of outsourcing for the HR function, summed up in the phrase ‘turkeys voting for Christmas’. HR professionals tread a fine line between doing what’s right for their company and decimating their own department.

Another popular trend is the creation of HR shared service centres, another cost-driven phenomenon explained by Patrick Kavanagh, who bases his analysis on the views of BAE and Royal Bank of Scotland. More front-line user experience comes direct from Zuken UK in our View from the Top interview.

The conclusion is: it may not be pretty out there, but it’s certainly lively.
