  PROFILE

Tony Knowles

Organisation: Zuken UK.

Interviewee:Tony Knowles.

Job Title: HR Consultant, formerly HR & Operations Director.

The Subject: Electronic software solutions company Zuken is an ‘early adopter’ of HR self-service intranet-based software.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Tony Knowles.

BACKGROUND: Tony is a human resource director with a track record across diverse industry sectors. In April last year, he established HR Consultancy Services to provide HR management advice to private and public sector companies, including Zuken. Prior to that he acted as Zuken Ltd’s HR and operations director from 1996 to March 2003. In that time he helped restructure the business to achieve corporate business objectives following Zuken’s acquisition of a Racal company, established high-level corporate dashboard measures for HR and business, and implemented the corporate HR system and company intranet across the group. Before Zuken, he was HR manager at Chartered Trust, a subsidiary of Standard Chartered Bank. He began his career as a personnel and training officer with Race Electronics.

Q: HOW DID ZUKEN FIRST TAKE ON HR SOFTWARE?

A: Zuken is a high-tech developer of electronics products, but when I joined in 1996, the company was very low-tech in applying HR technology – I joined a very traditional and dated HR department.

The company had been part of Racal Engineering and had been acquired by Zuken, who are based in Japan. There were significant issues to be resolved based on the acquisition and plans for growth. We began talking to potential HR software suppliers and in 1998 bought Personnel Manager and Recruitment Manager from Computers In Personnel (Compel).
