HR professionals are caught between cost constraints and using technology to improve their strategic role. Pat Sweet reports.

More than a third (36%) recognise that a key reason to outsource some or all of the HR function is to reduce the cost of services – along with freeing up HR to focus on more strategic issues (17%) and gaining access to specialist technical skills not available inhouse (15%).

However, as Figure 3 shows, only 30% of the sample are actually outsourcing some of their HR IT functions at the moment and just 5% are outsourcing everything, while a quarter (24%) are using an application services provider (ASP) for HR or payroll applications.
