When Joseph-Marie Jacquard, the French inventor, developed
the Jacquard loom in the early 1800s, little did he know that
he would be starting a chain of events lasting well into the
21st century and beyond.
The loom enabled a single operator to weave complex patterns.
Although these patterned fabrics fetched high prices, the
labour required to produce them often eliminated any profit.
