BAE Systems quickly realised that its management population was a mixed group but, just as important, that many of the senior managers were frequent travellers – planes, trains, automobiles and hotels as a routine way of life.

Similarly, the employees had varying degrees of familiarity with and access to computers – ranging from office workers all of whom had PCs, to factory shopfloor staff where access was through kiosks located in workstation areas or near the canteen.
