  PROFILE

Sharon Reason

Organisation: Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS).

Interviewee:Sharon Reason.

Job Title: Procurement Performance Manager.

The Subject: HBOS is using a Kalido data warehouse to streamline its procurement process after the Halifax and Bank of Scotland merged, helping achieve £300 million in savings.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Sharon Reason.

BACKGROUND: Sharon has been involved in data management and systems for the Halifax for 14 years, both in procurement and HR. She managed the implementation and operation of the procurement management information system for Halifax and was actively involved in the development of the group’s purchase order system.

In her current role as Procurement Performance Manager, she is responsible for delivering procurement information across the group, including access and delivery of data from multiple subsidiaries and account systems, to set targets for procurement action and monitor performance through KPIs.

She has managed the project to deliver the HBOS data warehousing system, including development of the business case, user requirements and user implementation.

Q: WHAT WERE THE BUSINESS DRIVERS THAT LED HBOS TO ADOPT ITS NEW DATA WAREHOUSING SYSTEM?

A: After the merger, we needed to deliver £300 million in savings by 2006, a lot of that through procurement. Within the procurement function, we had data in various different systems but we wanted to look at who spends money with whom and what on – a key for unlocking cost-saving opportunities.

In the Halifax, we had a data warehouse that could tell us what we were spending and who we were spending it with. But within Bank of Scotland, when information was needed, it usually required a lot of hard coding.

Both organisations were using Walkers accounts payable, but very different versions which meant that the systems were almost incompatible. We were very keen to get to the position where we could see both sets of data together.
