In the 1980s, a massive shift hit factories across the US and Europe. The approaches of mass production and scientific management used since the days of Henry Ford were transformed by the introduction of Japanese principles such as Just-in-Time production (JIT) and a focus on customer value known as ‘lean production’.

Traditionally, project management has suffered from many of the problems besetting mass production – late delivery, over-expenditure, an excess of formal procedures and paper work, errors leading to rework and redesign, poor customer interface, inter-departmental wrangling and general frustration and stress for all involved.
