  COMPANY FILE

Established in 1978, TNT Express Services UK and Ireland is a leading business-to-business express delivery company, handling time-sensitive business mail, parcels and freight.

TNT has developed its dominant position through organic growth and has an annual turnover of more than £650 million. It employs 9,000 people in the UK and Ireland and operates around 3,000 vehicles from over 70 locations. It delivers an average of around 380,000 consignments a week or 20 million a year, via a wholly-owned system of road and air routes.

To better understand customer profitability, the company’s finance department has adopted activity based costing in the shape of the Metify ABM tool from ALG Software.

Q: WHAT BENEFITS HAVE BEEN REALISED FROM THE NEW SYSTEM?

A: The major benefits have been those originally intended – that is, assessing the profitability of major customers through the shared user network. This enables us to provide senior management with the sort of information that allows them to have much more informed negotiations on rate structures, operational criteria and business mix with both existing and potential customers.
