Last winter, the sun began to set on the Microsoft Windows NT platform as Microsoft announced its timetable for ending support. It seems more than coincidental that this summer, the sun rose on a new operating system and application development platform – Windows Server 2003 and Visual Studio .NET 2003.

More important than Redmond’s product cycle, however, this phenomenon marks the equivalent of planetary alignment in the IT world. Perhaps for the first time since the mainframe era, companies can now expect a period of several years in which there will be no major platform introductions from Microsoft.
