Some industry analysts and participants believe that web services will break the ECM vendors’ grip by forcing them to fragment their offerings. If SAP, for instance, exposes its ERP capabilities as web services, it seems theoretically possible for competitors to offer equivalent web services of their own and attack SAP’s installed base piecemeal.

In keeping with the view that it is better to cannibalise one’s own installed base than wait for competitors to do so, the ECM vendors have proclaimed that they will provide web service interfaces to their products.
