Conspectus May 2003 - Summary

Storage and IT infrastructure management has jumped to the top of corporate priorities in recent years, as the impact of web-based data sharing, the increase in emailing, the growing use of digital images and the greater importance of corporate data generally has had its effect.

A good 10% of the organisations we surveyed for this issue have seen their storage requirements more than double in the last year alone. That is a startling statistic and a call for action even in these times of IT spending constraints.

There are a number of technological solutions. Networked rather than single-server storage is more flexible – and Cliff Leach weighs up the relative merits of SAN and NAS networked storage in his article.

Graeme Rowe highlights the advantages of another alternative, hierarchical storage management or HSM, while Johnny McLarty of SchlumbergerSema looks at the specific problem of email data management on pages.
