SAN and NAS are both important upcoming technologies for the management of distributed data. But while they sound similar, they take a fundamentally different approach, explains Cliff Leach.
There are a lot of deeply technical issues that have to be addressed when looking at where NAS and SAN fit into an architecture. The most common business issues which have a bearing on the debate are outlined in Table 1.
In all SAN and NAS architectures and topologies, components still fail – and so appropriate backup strategies are required.
