Luton Borough Council (LBC) serves 185,000 residents. The companies working within the borough are generally evolving from a manufacturing to a service-based economy, whilst Luton is known for its busy airport.
LBC has two data centres, one running Solaris 8 and the other running Windows 2000-based systems. It has 140 Oracle, Ingres, Informix and SQL applications, and operates a business continuity centre.
On the storage side, it has introduced an enterprise storage network using two Dell EMC CX600 disk systems, eight Dell EMC 16-port fibre channel switches, StorageTek tape libraries sourced from Dell and Veritas management software. The implementation was managed by Dell Technology Consultancy (DTC) partner, Posetiv.
LBC’s staff use over 2,750 networked desktop systems spread across 180 buildings, connected by a Cisco-based network infrastructure that includes broadband being rolled out to all schools by the summer of 2003. The council employs around 60 IT professionals to manage this environment.

Q: HOW DID YOU CARRY THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION?
A: We commissioned the kit in January/February. Then we went into the closed pilot phase – testing the performance of all the technologies, understanding the backup media and so on. The Open Pilot phase, where we are due to bring in all the storage technology, is due to be completed by June.
