 TECHNOLOGY FILE: CPM

Planning, budgeting and forecasting are traditionally handled by separate applications, requiring data to be moved between different sources.

An emerging breed of corporate performance management (CPM) applications offer budgeting integrated with planning, financial consolidation, and management reporting and analysis systems.

For example, Fibernet’s Comshare MPC application sits on a single platform, providing ‘one version of the truth’. MPC is built on the multi-tiered Comshare Application Architecture (CAA), enabling companies to configure the application according to performance requirements, the size and complexity of the volume of data, and the number of end users. At the core of CAA is a single centralised database. MPC can be implemented on the web, in client/server, or a combination of the two.

The forecasting module enables users to select a subset of data on which to base a prediction. It analyses the data, automatically selects an appropriate forecasting technique, and then forecasts. Predicted results are compared to the budget, and management alerted of potential problem areas or unrealistic budgets and forecastst.
