 PROFILE

Company: Allders.

Interviewee: Thomas Nielsen.

Job Title: IT Manager, Business Applications.

The Subject: Department store group Allders is building on a base of business intelligence software by installing new analytic applications.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Thomas Nielsen.

BACKGROUND: Nielsen has developed and implemented Allders’ IT infrastructure strategy, enterprise data warehouse strategy and enterprise architecture strategy. Prior to this role, he was corporate departments IT manager at airports management firm BAA, providing IT facilities for 1,500 people at eight sites, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. Aged 35 and married, he was born in Denmark and spent four years in the Danish Army before starting his IT career.

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST COME TO INSTALL BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE SOFTWARE?

A: A couple of years ago, a large number of our departments had a requirement for decision support systems – to provide buyers, merchandisers and departmental managers with a key set of core business reports, enabling them to better manage their stock and replenishment.

Business Objects’ business intelligence (BI) solution was chosen. We didn’t previously have a business intelligence tool, so this was our first front-end BI tool. Around 20-40 users in various departments, primarily in fashion and light household, are using it.
