Manufacturing systems come in many guises. They may be part of an ERP or enterprise resource planning package, or come under another banner such as ‘supply chain’.
Sometimes the packages will combine production and material planning logic (advanced planning and scheduling or APS) rather than the traditional approach of material requirements planning (MRP) which identifies required dates for all items made-in or bought out – coupled with capacity requirements planning (CRP) which then highlights overloaded resources.
