 PROFILE

Company: Legato Systems.

Interviewee: Rob Vergeer.

Job Title: EMEA vice president for consulting services.

The Subject: Data storage solutions supplier Legato has installed PSA software to help build and integrate its European consultancy operations.

PERSONAL FILE

NAME: Rob Vergeer.

BACKGROUND: Joined Legato in January 2000 from Computer Associates Benelux, where he was director of global professional services. Prior to that, he was professional services manager of Ingres and Amdahl. During his 28-year career, Vergeer has also held technical management positions at Petroleum Development Oman, Dow Chemical and British Leyland, supervising the expansion of information technology services in Europe and the Middle East.

Q: HOW DID LEGATO COME TO USE PSA?

A: It goes back originally to an invoicing and tax issue. All Legato’s invoicing for products, services and support was being done out of the US. But in 2000, we came to the conclusion that for compliance to EEC administrative processes and procedures, and to improve the quality of the system, we needed to introduce local currency invoicing within our European operations.

This was the key reason for us to start thinking how the services arm could run itself as a self-contained business. For Legato this was a big step from controlling everything from California, to allowing this small subset to run itself – but the trigger for that was the local currency billing.
