A directory is a very structured database which stores all the issued certificates. The directory also contains a list of certificates that, for one reason or another, have been revoked and are no longer to be trusted.
This Certificate Revocation List (CRL) is updated by the Certificate Authority on a regular basis, and is essentially a list of serial numbers of all the revoked certificates.
By getting a copy of the receiving user’s certificate, and then checking the most recently published CRL, the user will be sure that the certificate has not been revoked. If it has, the sending user should abort the transaction.
