E-Business: Enterprise Portals & Web Services (December 2002) Summary

The dotcom downturn created a lot of disillusion about e-business technology. Now it’s back from the brink – saved by the growing maturity of the software and suppliers, and the advent of two technologies – enterprise portals and web services.

Portals are about the here and now; web services provide promise for the future.

Portals – if they work, are implemented properly, get buy-in from the organisation, etc – offer a low-cost, browser-based ‘window’ into the company’s data, allowing each member of staff to access the applications, personal and corporate information that is most relevant to them.

Web services are a series of standards and components that can improve data sharing and integration between enterprise-level applications.

With a special focus on portals and web services, our review of the e-business systems market ranges from research into its new lease of life, to briefing articles from market specialists such as PA Consulting, CSC, Rubus and Pecaso.
