  COMPANY FILE

The BOC Group – formerly the British Oxygen Company – is one of the world’s largest industrial gases companies. It has around 43,000 staff, and sales of over £4 billion in 2001. It has 2 million customers in more than 50 countries, and well over 40,000 suppliers.

Alongside its core Process Gas Solutions (PGS) and Industrial and Special Products (ISP) operations that supply industrial gases, BOC has three other key businesses: BOC Edwards supplies high-purity gases, related equipment and vacuum pumps to the semiconductor industry; Gist is a specialist logistics company operating principally in the UK, serving customers such as Marks & Spencer; and Afrox Hospitals, based in South Africa, is one of the largest suppliers of private healthcare outside the US.

In IT terms, BOC is integrating its operations via a global SAP R/3 ERP system. Above this, it has standardised on mySAP portal technology which it is using to roll out over 50 e-business projects, mainly focused on delivering value-added services to its customers. These include its key customer portal (www.BOCResponse.com).

BOC is also using Interwoven’s Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software.

Q: ARE YOU USING PORTALS INTERNALLY?

A: Our most recent initiative has been to look at how we can provide services to help our employees do their jobs most effectively.

Known as the employee portal, MyBOC will provide a one-stop-shop to access information, tools and applications from one place. MyBOC will provide the front end to WebCentric – the infrastructure initiative which manages applications centrally and provides user access from thin clients via the web.
