Using web services in content management can open the door to new levels of business-oriented services, says Martin Pike of Stilo.

One of the major goals of web services is the provision of these open, standard interfaces, which should lower the cost of application ownership by providing flexibility. Obviously the mere exposure of a proprietary API will not achieve that.

One needs to understand how to take advantage of the open nature of the interface to an application that the web service mechanism offers. The ‘loose coupling’ of applications is one of the key ideas to grasp.
