It is sometimes sobering to think that barely 10 years ago the web was an esoteric technology largely unknown by the outside world. Quite why is not too clear, but during the late 1990s the internet took off.

Clearly, this is a relatively new technology – evolving fast, with few ground rules and even fewer trusted facts. Worse, those touchstones that do exist are largely negative – you can take it as a given that yesterday’s leading virus will eventually be overtaken by a new one, sooner or later. The same goes for pretty much every aspect of IT security.
