For project tracking, the days of multi-coloured push-pins, carefully ruled PERT charts and different coloured pens for each team member are long gone. All but the most basic projects are now being tracked electronically, with multiple views and statistical breakdowns immediately available.

In addition, the sizeable Y2K efforts of most companies have secured the place of the project office (PO) in the toolset of most project managers. The success of these data-intensive projects can largely be attributed to the centralised control and reporting provided by the PO.
