| When
will we ever get fast enough access to the web? Broadband technology offers
some hope, says Catherine Cairns. |

CAUTIONARY TALES notwithstanding, most pundits would agree that the long-term prospects for commerce online are rosy – whether via a fixed device (PC, TV or multi-purpose plasma screen) or mobile device (phone, PDA, 3G device-of-the-future). But what is the major brake on the growth of online commerce? It is the world wide wait. The explosion in voice, data and video internet traffic is creating major demand for broadband access. And until we have such access, the true potential of online commerce cannot be unlocked.
If you liken the worldwide voice and data transmission network to the road system, then the main roads and motorways are the backbone, carrying vast quantities of information at top speed. No jams (at least most of the time).
