Web HR

Lea Mai examines the potential of web-enabled self-service HR applications for managing the HR needs of the organisation.

SELF-SERVICE HR, which can be based on a web-enabled system, allows individuals to administer their own HR requirements.

This process starts with the more transactional aspects of HR – like getting employees to fill in their holiday forms online and letting the system keep a track of the amount of annual leave used. And a quick look at self-service HR systems in use today shows that you could replace a number of the HR team with a virtual employee support system.

These are some of the things that staff members can do with ‘self-service’:
Administer their personal information such as changes to name, address, telephone and emergency contact details.
Have their personal details uploaded into existing databases (eg, employee phone lists and e-mail groups) and organisation charts.
View conditions of employment, HR policies, information packs, frequently asked questions and details of benefits packages such as private health cover or car allowance.
