HR STAFF WITHIN professional services firms are being given a new technology option. So-called professional services automation (PSA) software promises to automate many of their more mundane time-consuming tasks, like project management, staff utilisation and time and expense billing. The background to the emergence of PSA software is that services firms in whatever industry face many of the same challenges: their work is project based, and each project will require a different mix of skills at different stages. Some of the necessary expertise may be available inhouse – provided staff are not already allocated to another job. Rare skills, or technical knowledge which will only be needed for a limited part of the project, may have to be bought in from elsewhere. Working out how to resource each project, not only once it has started but also in the preliminary stages of a bid for new business, is a major HR headache. More...
