Self-service adds value

Paul Marson at Access Consulting believes employee self-service will free HR for a strategic role.

INFORMATION technology has been heralded as the greatest force of change in our time. It has revolutionised the way we work, the way we shop and the way we relax.

The HR department has not escaped the impact of IT. Payroll has been automated. Personal information, benefits and employment history are all recorded electronically. Timesheets and expenses can be recorded electronically and then analysed to provide management information.

The latest trend, however, not only improves processes but can also change the way the HR department is perceived and the value it brings to a company. It is called employee self-service (ESS).

ESS enables employees to manage and update their own personal information such as change of name, address and bank details, through to more complex information such as timesheets and holiday request forms.
