John Walker at Experian believes security has been too often overlooked in the rush to e-commerce.

OVER THE PAST two to three years, there has been a determined drive by many businesses to enjoy the fruits of trading over the internet. Companies want to maximise the business opportunities and profits that can be earned through internet trading.

However, in this rush to introduce e-commerce, some important elements of best practice have sometimes been forgotten or are being applied in a way that does not best support the business or its technology.

One element that has clearly been missed, judging by the amount of press comment, is security.

Much trade takes place over the internet - yet most people would agree this is a potentially very dangerous environment which is used by hostile groups to launch attacks against target sites.

Generally speaking, there are two sets of people who pose a threat to system security. The first are the 'because it's there' category. The second we might call the 'benefits may be enjoyed' group.
