E-Business Solutions

Leap in the dark

EXPERT OPINION: DARYL BOOTH of Arthur Andersen finds companies rushing into e-business activity.

One overwhelming feature of the latest Conspectus survey into the e-business marketplace is the number of companies who recognise they have been attempting to implement e-business without either having a coherent strategy or really knowing what the benefits will be. And we're talking about companies who have often spent tens of millions of pounds or more!

This statistic is nothing short of incredible. There has probably never been another time in business when so much technology has been deployed in such a fragmented way and without a clear idea of the potential benefits.

Equally, the survey shows that only 51% of the sample believed that they had a company-wide e-business strategy, and only 25% of the respondents said their companies had experienced a positive financial impact from e-business.

This lack of financial return could be a timing issue, with more time being required for a financial payback to be achieved - but with 50% of respondents saying they didn't actually know what benefits had been delivered by e-business, the signs don't look particularly good.
