MANUFACTURING industry has many problems. Firstly, it is having to adapt to a global environment in which competition has become fiercer and timescales shorter. Manufacturing firms originally configured themselves as substantially free-standing and independent entities - but most came to recognise that this was a very inefficient structure: it required a vast range of skills and knowledge, it produced a cumbersome management structure, and it meant that substantially the same components were designed, built, stored and delivered from many similar plants worldwide. It was obviously a much better idea to devolve some of this work to suppliers who could afford to develop specialist skills and to buy specialist production equipment, because they were supplying a range of similar customers with similar component requirements.
